Mintz Masterclass Patents 101: Event Recap

FORGE hosted its first collaborative event with our new Titanium partner Mintz, one of the most innovative and successful IP Law firms in the country. The Mintz Masterclass: Patents 101 focused on intellectual property rights for the nearly 50 startups and innovators in attendance. It was presented by attorney Michael Van Loy, who was included on the San Diego Super Lawyers Rising Star: Intellectual Property list in 2016 and recognized by Best Lawyers in America for his work in Patent Law in 2021.

Michael began by addressing the competitive business advantages of patenting your technology and the importance of creating barriers to entry for your competitors. He went on to explain the process of applying for a patent and the contents of those applications.

“If you’ve got important and valuable technical innovations, I certainly recommend talking to a patent attorney earlier rather than later,” Michael Van Loy concluded. While patents always add to the value of a company, he admits that some things are not always best protected by patents and may be better off as trade secrets. However, it’s always important to speak to an expert attorney, like those at Mintz, for guidance on your intellectual property needs.
